* The same fate befell Sparta, believe it or not. In his 2011 book How Civilizations Die, David Goldman notes historical accounts of Sparta shrinking from a population of 10,000 men to just 1,000, shortly before the city-state’s fall to Thebes. After Sparta went into eclipse, its military traditions lived on in a ceremonial state, mostly for the delight of visitors from other parts of Greece. Goldman quotes two other historians (Paul Cartledge and Antony Spawforth) who depict Sparta’s decline into a kind of living museum: “The prestige of the ‘revived’ training and the tourism which it generated helped this otherwise fairly typical provincial Greek city to maintain a place in the world and allowed the Spartans to feel that they were still ‘special.’” Goldman concludes, somewhat less charitably, that modern Italy is becoming not a museum, but a “theme park.” Ouch.

* Wattenberg, by the way, deserves your respect. In the 1970s, he was a lone voice in the wilderness pointing out that Paul Ehrlich’s “Population Bomb” theory was ridiculous. For his trouble, he was often used as a punching bag by the overpopulation crowd. In 1970, this meant nearly all of the media, the policy elite, and academia. It was so bad that on August 13, 1970, Johnny Carson brought him onto the The Tonight Show to “debate” Ehrlich, on whose side Carson was firmly planted. History shows without a scintilla of doubt that Wattenberg was right.
